Today I Checked my Privilege: In case of being white
Cape Town is certainly a spicy environment that has apparently been untouched since the end of apartheid. Race in Cape Town is complicated. In a pristine city, you have movements like #FeesMustFall, bellowing colonialism, white tears, and #fuckwhitepeople. It’s getting awkward for the indigenous whites here, they can only hide in their cascading sunset homes and loft apartments for so long. “I don’t see colour” and “apartheid was like 20 years ago” won’t let you pass go anymore. Today I Checked my Privilege is an ironic guide for the awkward situation in which the white South Africans find themselves in.
